How GCSE Exam Boards Work in England

LoveMaths Tutoring UK explains that GCSEs in England aren't set by one single government board: several independent exam boards, including AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC/Eduqas, each publish their own specification, and schools choose which board to follow for each subject they teach.

Is there one national GCSE exam?

No. England's GCSEs are set by several independent exam boards rather than a single government body - the main ones are AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC/Eduqas.

How does a school end up with a particular board?

Each exam board publishes its own specification for a subject, and a school's department chooses which specification to teach - so two schools studying "GCSE Maths" can be following different boards, with different topic order, command words and past papers.

Which exam board does my child's course follow?

That's set by the school, not by LoveMaths Tutoring UK, and it's worth checking directly with the school or your tutor so that practice papers and topic order match what's actually being taught.
